The event started from Taunton Deane services, where 13 teams of 3 crews gathered. The cars entered reflected the range of vehicles on the road rally scene today, ranging from Andy Juniper and Andy Watson's Ford Orion (which was to break a driveshaft on the way home having survived a 'straight on at T') to the immaculate Escort of Gareth Lloyd & Ryland Jones (which was to be found dripping oil in the finish car park).
The route promised 180 miles of West Country lanes. As usual for ASWMC events there was a bare minimum of link/neutral/transport sections with a total 'standard' mileage of about 170! Into these 170 mile the organisers had placed 76 controls (ie one about every 2-3 miles!) splitting the sections into Regularity and Standard. With a lot of the route regularity crews had to be careful to avoid Fails for stopping within sight of a control, and some crews were also penalised for not having their codeboards correctly signed off !
To test the navigators Bob Davis had devised one of the most time consuming sets of route instructions imaginable. Nothing was particularly difficult (bar the usual 'don't go vias' and circular herringbone) but there was so much to plot that the navigators were hard pressed to find the end of the sections before the drivers did! The navigators however took this in their stride as witnessed by the winners score of 35 minutes.
Doug Kingsley & PRAR sportingly stopped to retrieve Mick Smith's Sunbeam from a stream where he had parked it. They were somewhat miffed later when Mick did the job properly and planted it into a hedge, halfway between the road and the field 10' lower! Quote from breakfast: "Should have left them in the stream!
". Doug/PRAR were lucky to avoid a similar incident after Doug's cavalier shed all its brake fluid into the rear drums. They completed the last 10 miles with no brakes at all due to the fluid rendering the hand brake inoperative. They were just able to avoid OTL and finished 10th O/A.
Other cars in trouble included the TVR of John Upham (Broken throttle cable) and Dean Taylor, the 205 of Mark Wagstaff & John Chadwick which arrived at the finish with a modified front wing (the same one they had 'adjusted' with a tree on the Cascade earlier in the year!). Mike Biss found that the extra 6" that his estate has over the standard Sierra lead to an expensive corner smashing exercise. His hand brake turn was otherwise faultless! Marshall Allen & Drew Todd over from Ireland in the big Triumph struggled on with a broken shock absorber mount. Their press on regardless style helped ANICC to net 3rd overall (after a recount).
Eventually, battle scarred and weary, the crews arrived at the Post House Hotel, where the best breakfasts of the year were served. Even though the majority of crews could be classified as Masters the results still took some calculation (with some scores looking more like cricket scored). Eventually John Quenby was wheeled out to present the awards, prior to dashing off to see more carnage at Donnington Park and he paid tribute to the results of the winners in light of the severity of the route.
With the team competition decided on the total score of the three cars entered these retirements left the teams somewhat depleted - notably the ASWMC and ACSMC had two crews in the top ten and one retirement!
